Welcome To Las Vegas!

Well, I’m unpacked and settled back into my regular life but wishing I was still down South because it is freezing here! The weather in Las Vegas was exactly the type of weather I could endure 365 days a year. It’s dry, it hardly rains and it’s very hot and sunny! Speaking of Vegas, did I mention how great my trip to the Neon City was? Well, it was great and it was over way too fast. Sitting on the plane, I wasn’t sure what to expect once I arrived. Looking out of my small window in the sky, all I could see was darkness. I waited and waited for the bright city lights when all of a sudden there they were! The city was much bigger than I thought it would be and I was surprised when my aircraft touched down so close to The Strip! How convenient! Earlier that day, I left freezing cold St. John’s, Newfoundland with a wool coat on and was nearly knocked out by the heat when I stepped outside of the airport. I met my sister, who flew from Calgary, in the baggage area and a shuttle took us straight to our hotel. Because there were other passengers on our shuttle who were staying at various hotels and our was the last stop, we got a mini tour of The Strip before reaching our destination, The Luxor, which turned out to be the giant pyramid I spotted from the plane. After we checked in, we immediately went to our room, unpacked and rested up for our first full day in Las Vegas! Despite the long day we had the day before, we were still up by 7:00AM. We wandered around our hotel for a while and discovered that there were several Starbucks shops in our building. We grabbed some coffees to go and made our way outside and onto The Strip. The air cooled since the night before so heat wasn’t an issue. Later that day we discovered that the heat is not the only thing that can harm you while walking in Vegas. I had to buy a new pair of shoes on the way back because I wore mine out and my feet were severely cut and blistered! We didn’t do much that first day except get familiar with our surroundings. We found a Denny’s quite a ways down the street and stopped for a late breakfast and than walked as far as the Stratosphere and turned around. We stopped at a few places on the way back like the fountains at the Bellagio and the Lion Habitat. It was dark when we made it back to our hotel and we decided to turn in fairly early because at 8:00 the next morning, a shuttle was picking us up to take us to the airport where a rental car was waiting for us so we could spend 2 days seeing the areas outside the city. Stay tuned for that adventure in my next post!
